Learning Objectives:Substance use disorders commonly occur in patients with schizophrenia and contribute greatly to its morbidity.Animal models, combined with translational magnetic resonance imaging, can be useful in uncovering the causal underpinnings of substance use and schizophrenia.Longitudinal studies looking at the consequences of drug use during adolescence in animals can help us understand how this use may contribute to the risk for both schizophrenia and substance use.
